Still your puppy will need good training. For without good training soon your Bullmastiff puppy will be out of control. With all the natural energy that Bullmastiff puppies have, they can overwhelm you with their playful unruliness. You will find though that this happens most of the time with any dog. So once you decide to own a Bullmastiff, training your puppy should be one of your first priorities. Training should begin the first day you bring your puppy home.

Luckily, Bullmastiffs, as can be found in many large dogs, are very receptive to training and they are more than eager to please their masters. But, it is important that training starts early and then it must remain consistent for the term of the training. Really your dog will love you if you continue to teach it new things all of its life. Bullmastiffs are always more than happy when they have your attention. By giving them a lifetime of training you will always be assured that you dog will not take advantage of you and that they will continue to remain a well behaved dog.

What Makes a Bullmastiff Special

Training your Bullmastiff will be different in the following three ways.

1. Bullmastiffs are generally very calm and relaxed. They will remain this way if they get a lot of exercise. They not only need exercise, they need it on a regular basis. Often times they will not seem interested in getting exercise but still they need it. They don’t seem to want to run much so their walking exercise will take longer for your to perform. This is especially if you want them to get the exercise they are going to remain a calm dog.
2. They crave consistent and regular companionship. When they get this they tend to remain more even tempered especially as they grow older. They need daily attention so if you are a traveler and will not be taking your Bullmastiff with you when you travel you might consider another breed of dog. Bullmastiffs need more socialization more frequently than most other breeds. This applies not only to people but to other dogs too.
3. Be sure you are patient. With patience and a lot of time a Bullmastiff will be a much happier dog and they love to make you a happy master. One thing, because of their size an often walk in the park might seem like a chore. So it might be said that raising a Bullmastiff Puppy is no walk in the park.

Bullmastiff Training Basics

Before you take your Bullmastiff puppy home it should have been with it’s mother for at least eight weeks. Be sure that your puppy gets a lot of socialization with the siblings in it’s litter. They should remain together throughout this early stage of it’s life. By doing this you will be allowing it to maintain a socialization atmosphere with its brothers and sisters. In the end you will be helping your Bullmastiff Puppy with his ability to remain calm once it has been removed from the litter.  It will also give your puppy the ability to maintain a good temperament in the early months of its life.

As your puppy grows older you will need to continue to maintain this socialization.  You should be with your Bullmastiff puppy for at least the first three months of its life. It is also helpful to all it to socialize with other dogs whenever possible and often.

Unless you want your dog to become an aggressive guard dog you should not train it to be so. Because of their natural tendencies to be protective it is easy to change their temperament from docile top much more aggressive. They will become even more protective. Once you have done this it is no longer easy to control the natural instinct of a Bullmastiff “to guard” and watch for threats. So avoid training your Bullmastiff to be a guard dog. Bullmastiff Training for Obedience

It is not difficult to train your Bullmastiff puppy to be obedient. Just start at a young age, usually around ten to fourteen weeks just after your puppy has been housebroken and knows its place in your world. Be sure that you are not aggressive or violent with your Bullmastiff. The last thing you want is a dog to be just like you taught it to be. Aggressive…! Obedience training is simple if you just follow a few simple steps.

Because of their size most Bullmastiffs will not be doing a lot of tricks. They are relative relaxed and you find that the most important things you can teach your Bullmastiff puppy is to sit, to stay, to come and to walk  easily on a leash.

Your Bullmastiff puppy is going to want to constantly chase things from cats, to birds to other dogs. You will have your hands full teaching your puppy not to chase things but it will be worth it once you have this under control. It is not that your puppy wants to hurt things, it is just that they are so big that they can easily hurt things if they are allowed to chase them. So it is best to get an early handle on this and keep your Bullmastiff puppy under control.

As with most dogs and with your Bullmastiff puppies training, basic dog training methods work quite well. But with a Bullmastiff it may require a just a little bit more practice and patience on your part to teach them the rules. Just be consistent, walk often, socialize and be around other dogs and you will have the best dog in the world and it will become your best friend.
